God calls out to us in Isaiah 55, “Ho everyone that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money: come ye, buy, and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. Wherefore do ye spend money for that which is not bread? and your lalbour for that which satisfieth not? hearken diligently unto me, and eat ye that which is good, and let your soul delight itself in fatness.”
Have hard times just about worn you down? Are you broke? Would you like real value just once? Does the idea of something truly free sound good to you? Are you weary of working yourself to exhaustion with no peace? Would it be good to just be like a child again and delight in things around you? If you could answer yes to all of these questions, then why not set the material world aside for a bit and consider your soul needs. Did you ever think you have a soul, and that it will live forever, even after your flesh is laid aside for dead someday? Your soul has more serious and everlasting needs than even your body. It thirsts and hungers, experiences emotions, and grows weary. It is also dead and in a state of separation from God, if it has not been quickened by His Spirit. Perhaps you are scoffing now and thinking you know better about souls, if there be such things, and their deadness or eternity.
I would remind you of another idea that God wants you to know in Isaiah 55. “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts. For as the rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, but watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower, and bread to the eater: So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.”
I ask you, would God go to such great glory and wonder to create your physical body and provide for its needs with all the wonderful foods, rain, sunshine, seedtime and harvest, and give you emotions and wondorous mental capacities then send you on your way to never know your benefactor? To live a few snippets of time and die, and go back to the dust forever? Even in our material world that makes no sense. No, the great glorious creator of the heaven and earth has a much grander plan. He has given you a soul, so that you can have a relationship with him, forever! God desires to commune with you through the Holy Spirit, but until your soul is quickened, he cannot feed your soul, or quench its thirst. And if you your soul is not quickened, He can not give you that priceless wine and bread that satisfies, and you will never know the delight of a fat soul.
God is saying to you, “Come now, and let us reason together, …though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.” I want you to know that…”I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth…” The gospel is the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is a fact that Christ died a cruel death on the cross, was buried, and raised again to live everlasting on the third day. His righteous blood was shed on the cross to pay for your unrighteous sins. For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God (Ro:23). You haven’t sinned? Romans 3:20 tells us that “by the law is the knowledge of sin.” God gave the law which we call the Ten Commandments to define sin. Have you taken God’s name in vain? Coveted something that was not yours? Lied? Stolen something? Christ the Son of God, was the only person in the flesh who kept the law perfect. The cost of this sin is eternal death. That is the death of the soul. God knew from the beginning of time we would need a Savior, a way to restore the soul dead in sin and tresspasses. Eternal life is his gift to us. That life is through his Son, Jesus Christ. There is no other way to God. You may think you have a better plan. The world is full of alternative paths to God, but remember, your thoughts are not God’s thoughts. We must come to him HIS WAY. His way requires shed blood. The life is in the blood, and it is His creation, and His plan. I remind you, His plan will cost you nothing, and Him everything. “Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God” Hebrews 12:2. The joy that Christ looked to was the fellowship with the Father and all those who would believe to the quickening of their souls. The only work required of you is to believe you are a sinner, believe you need a Savior, believe that Jesus Christ was the Son of God who died on the cross in your place, and rose again on the third day to live forever more. Romans 10:9 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.”
Still thirsty, and hungry deep down in your soul? You can buy the wine and milk with out money and without price. Call upon the name of the Lord today. “If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water” John 8:37-38.
